The Price of Freedom

Memorial Day's Profound Impact on Businesses and Veteran-owned Enterprises

By: Greg Modd

As Americans, Memorial Day serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery, courage, and sacrifices made by our fallen heroes, all in the name of preserving our cherished freedoms. What is often under-discussed, however, is the impact this day and the values it upholds has on our business landscape - particularly for veteran-owned enterprises.

Memorial Day is more than a federal holiday marked by parades, barbecues, and the unofficial kickoff of summer. It's a solemn occasion to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Writing that wells my eyes with water. As we pay tribute to these heroes, we must remember that their sacrifices allow us to enjoy the liberties we often take for granted. Rights include the freedom to establish and operate businesses - the backbone of our nation's economy.

For businesses, this day carries substantial importance. It serves as an opportunity to engage with their community and customers and reflect on their corporate responsibilities and values. Many companies observe Memorial Day by offering special promotions or services, donating to veterans' charities, or simply closing their doors to give employees time to honor the day how they deem appropriate. These actions, while boosting morale and customer loyalty, also underscore a company's commitment to honoring the memory of our fallen heroes.

Arguably, no one appreciates this freedom more deeply than veteran entrepreneurs - the men and women who have served our nation and now navigate the entrepreneurial landscape. With over 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses in the U.S., this sector represents a significant portion of the nation's small business community. Including Penultimate People Consulting!

Veteran-owned businesses uniquely embody the spirit of Memorial Day. These enterprises contribute to the economy and symbolize the enduring legacy of our servicemen and servicewomen. They represent the strength, discipline, and resilience that military service cultivates - traits that are equally vital in business.

For veteran entrepreneurs, Memorial Day holds a profound significance. It's a day to remember their fallen comrades and acknowledge the price of the freedom they now use to drive their businesses. It is a testament to their ability to transform challenges into opportunities and translate their military skills into business acumen.

As we commemorate Memorial Day, we are reminded that freedom is not free. It carries a cost paid by the brave individuals who have laid down their lives for our nation. For businesses, particularly veteran-owned, it's a day to reflect on this cost and honor it by using our freedoms wisely, responsibly, and productively.

Remember to support these veteran-owned businesses on Memorial Day and every day. Their success is a tribute to their service, a testament to their resilience, and a tangible reminder of the price of our freedoms. And as we patronize these businesses, we acknowledge that while freedom is not free, it's a price worth paying. Sī vīs pācem, parā bellum is a Latin adage translated as "If you want peace, prepare for war." President Ronald Reagan stated, "As for the enemies of freedom, those who are potential adversaries, they will be reminded that peace is the highest aspiration of the American people. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will not surrender for it – now or ever.”

On this Memorial Day, we honor the fallen, we celebrate freedom, and we express gratitude for the contributions of all businesses, especially those owned by veterans. Through these combined efforts, the true meaning of the day shines through: freedom is indeed costly, but its rewards are priceless.
